Secondary School campus in Kashitu, Zambia
The aim of the project is to provide quality education and improve the overall standard of living in the Kashitu area. It was created by Petr Canda for his Master’s thesis at Czech Technical University (CTU). The project is a result of an international collaboration between Zambian NGO New Renato and its Czech partner Friends of New Renato. The campus is currently under construction. The first building, workshop, was built in summer 2023 and a new building, a teachers’ house, is scheduled to be built in the summer of 2024.
The construction method of the project is inspired by the vernacular architecture of the area. The project uses unburnt bricks, which are the main component of traditional construction. However the mixture for the bricks has been refined by rigorous testing to create reliable and sustainable high quality bricks. The traditional manual brick-press machine has also been redesigned for fast production.
